thanksgiving adventures

Earlier this week I thought I was going to be having a nice, quiet thanksgiving at home. No such luck. I am now in Cali staying with my crazy Mexican relatives (for those of you who have met them, the same ones that were at my house for a while). They just barely moved into their new house about two days ago and, as such, lack certain essentials, such as shower curtains and a kitchen table. My parents have taken this all in stride and are going to be spending the next few weeks helping them make the house livable.
The ride up was rather entertaining, to say the least.
We left yesterday, stopping in cedar city for dinner (as Shelli and I could direct my mom to every possible fast food place within a mile radius). When we'd finished eating I went outside to flag everyone to the car (meaning that I opened the door to the car, stood outside it and waved all of the kids from the bathroom to the car and hoped that we didn't loose anyone). As children poured from everywhere, the guy parked beside us sat and watched with a confused expression on his face, then asked where we were from (bear in mind we were still in Utah at this point). I replied that we lived near AF. With a look of dawning comprehension he said "ahh. Utah County" then went along his way.
Last night we stayed in the Lady Luck Casino in Vegas (not my first recommendation). Unfortunately the casino does not allow dogs. As such my suitcase was commandeered and emptied (it being the biggest and least complicated of the lot) to form an "inconspicuous" carrier for our rather unhappy dog Heidi. After coaxing her inside and leaving our Mormon War wagon (thank you whit) in the hands of the valet parking people, I picked up the rather wobbly suitcase and booked it for the elevator, past all of the hotel security and casino operators, with 8 snickering children following behind. Fortunately Heidi wasn’t moving too much, and we made it to our room with no one the wiser.
The wait in the morning however, proved to be a little more difficult. Heidi was once again returned to the suitcase and we all went down to wait for them to bring the car around. The valet guy looked positively tickled pink to be driving the huge van. My mom and siblings distracted the guy around the back, while I went to the front, got Heidi out, and gave her to Kaiti to walk. When they came around the corner Mr. Valet looked like he'd had whiplash from the double take, assuming that the dog had been in the car that he had been driving only moments before. As I recall mom laughed about that one till we reached the freeway.
Anyways, Shelli and I will be here until Saturday, then we'll be driving home Sunday in time for school on Monday, but I'll be checking the journal frequently until then.
